Summer school will begin on Monday, June 21, 2010 for students and end on Thursday, July 29th. There will be no school on Monday, July 5 in celebration of Independence Day. Please be sure to check course descriptions to make sure you know how many weeks each course is offered. All classes will be 55 minutes long, except for those classes that run for a two-hour time period. Please refer to course descriptions for the length of each class.

Course descriptions are listed in this handbook. The courses are listed in alphabetical order. The first two lines of each course contain the following information: Course title, course length (either 3 or 6 weeks), and grades for which the course is available. Give careful attention to the grade level of each course. Please register for classes according to your child’s current grade level. Please be sure you have enough courses to fill out the schedule. Busing students require a 4-hour schedule.
Summer school credit course work
is meant to provide students with the opportunity to earn high school credits,
yet summer school is an abbreviated time frame for these courses. Therefore, we will adhere to an attendance
and tardiness policy. Students and
parents will be asked to sign a contract, which will outline the attendance and
tardiness policies.
Please understand that the attendance and tardiness
policies are to uphold the integrity of the high school graduation requirement
and high school credits. Please do not
request summer school administrators to make special arrangements that differ
from this policy. Please arrange all
family vacations and other needs around summer school. If there are questions
regarding credit classes, please contact Mike Howard, 920-675-1210.
ENRICHMENT CLASSES
Although we would like all students to attend enrichment classes on a regular basis, the attendance policy is more relaxed. Please take into account that teachers prepare lessons for all students enrolled in their classes. Students will not be dropped from enrichment classes based on attendance. Please understand that refunds of fees or out-of-district tuition will not be reimbursed based on student absence in these classes.
Once summer school is in session, our office is located in the Guidance Office of the high school. Parents are requested to call the Summer School at 675-1126 if a student will be absent. Please do not call the high school office.
Please notify our office if you choose to withdraw your child from summer school.

For liability reasons, students are not permitted to leave the high school campus during summer school hours, unless they are accompanied by staff to attend class in another location. (Some classes meet at the Middle School and West Elementary, as well as the nature classes off campus.) All registered students are required to remain on high school property unless they are leaving school to go home for the rest of the day. Students will not be permitted to leave campus and return for classes. Students who ride the bus must have a complete four hour schedule, with no gaps in their schedule. If a student is in violation of this policy, and has received a warning about leaving campus, they will be removed from summer school for the remainder of summer school.

Requests for schedule changes can only be made if the request is made by a parent in person or in writing. Entry into another course can only be made if that class has an opening.

The safety and welfare of your child is a priority to all staff in the school district. If your child becomes ill or injured while under the supervision of the school, the following steps will be taken:

ALL ABOUT HORSES
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES K-4
If you have an interest in horses, this is the class for you. Students will hear stories, play games and learn about different horse breeds, how to take care of horses and the role horses play in our society. Students will be involved in projects and activities that help them learn more about horses.
ALL ABOUT DINOSAURS
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES K-3
Come learn about the different species of dinosaurs, the bones, the parts of a dinosaur, what they ate, where they lived and much more! We will learn through stories, projects and hands on activities!
AMAZING ANIMALS
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 3, 4, 5
Read amazing facts about common or unusual animals. Share the most interesting facts with your friends. Create newspaper headings, radio or television broadcasts, and view short animal videos.
ART & DESIGN
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES K-4
Learn to paint, print, construct,
draw, use texture, and pattern in various hands-on individual designs. Plans and sketches are a preliminary start
for drawings. Children work out designs
by arranging lines, shapes, texture and color to their liking. They learn to discover design in everyday
objects, plants and animals. Improvement
is made in manipulating art materials increasing hand dexterity. $5.00

Using different metals, students

BASEBALL FUNDAMENTALS

Students
will learn the fundamentals of baseball, such as hitting, catching and
throwing. They will also get an
opportunity to play baseball games that are appropriate for their age and skill

BASKETBALL FUNDAMENTALS I

This is an introductory basketball course for boys and girls focusing on the basics of dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense maneuvers. This class will incorporate fun drills and games to spark interest in the game. This is a great opportunity to practice your skills over the summer!
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 5, 6, 7
This class will work on fundamental basketball skills. This class is open to both boys and girls and will work on shooting, defense, offense, picks and lay-ups. This is a good opportunity to practice basketball skills and prepare the student for the basketball season. This class is highly recommended for students who plan to participate on their school basketball team.
BEARS, BEARS EVERYWHERE
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES K-3
Join the action as the students in this class have lots of fun sharpening their reading, math and writing skills. Students will read and listen to fiction and nonfiction literature. They will enjoy writing stories. Math skills will be reinforced as the students work on “bear related” math problems. Students will also enjoy doing art projects and learning “bear” poems and songs.
BEGINNING MICROSOFT EXCEL
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 4-6
In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of Excel. Students will create graphs, charts, and use formulas. The concepts of Excel will reinforce math skills learned throughout the school year.
BETTER THINKING THRU GAMES

Students will learn critical thinking skills, strategies, and decision-making using board games, logic puzzles, brain teasers, and computer software. Each thinking skill or strategy will be discussed and reviewed briefly, then put into action.
BIOLOGY FOR CREDIT

course is designed for students who have failed a semester of required

this course will be chants, floor cheers, pom-pom routines and basic

EXERCISING FOR HEALTH AND ENJOYMENT

Are you getting tired of just sitting around the house? It’s summer time…no need to just sit in front of the TV or play video games. Here is an opportunity for you to get out, make new friends, and learn new games. Exercise can be a lot of fun, and a good way to meet others. This course will help children understand how exercise can help them not only be more physically fit, but also make them feel better about themselves. Some of the activities included will be: parachute games, kickball, tag games, organized sports, and a special skating day when students may bring in roller blades and scooters. Come and see how much fun exercise can be!
FLAG FOOTBALL
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 4 – 6
This course is open to both girls and boys. The purpose of this course is to give students an understanding and an appreciation for the game of flag football. Drills and lead-up games will be used to develop and reinforce specific football skills. Students will learn about the rules, sportsmanship, punting, kicking, quarterbacking, blocking fundamentals, long and short snaps, receiving, defensive play, offensive play and special team functions.

Students will have the opportunity
to create foam shape art projects using WonderFoam. Use your creativity to design an assortment

Students will be exploring educational Internet sites to help reinforce beginning reading skills, beginning math skills, and beginning keyboarding. Proper keyboarding technique will be monitored through the course.

This course will emphasize the development of better social skills. Students will experience fun activities through one on one, small group, and large group interactions. Learning will pinpoint areas of needed growth and maturity so that students can make friends more easily.

skills such as sand play, putting, and chipping, Also students will learn how
to keep score as they play in the “four hole shootout” a couple of times a

Introduction to juggling is designed to teach the fundamental skill of juggling. Students will be taught different drills and juggling patterns which will help develop hand/eye coordination and foster independent learning.

Students will use computers to learn or review the keyboard through teacher instruction. Proper typing technique will be monitored through the class. These students will also be using Internet sites to practice keyboarding skills and review basic reading skills, spelling and basic math.

This class is all about the different breeds and needs of dogs! We will learn about the Humane Society and different shelters that help dogs. Each student will choose a different breed of dog to do a project on to share at the end of the class.

Learn about the exciting art of soap making through hands
on class activities. Students will learn
about the history of soap making and have the chance to create several

Curl up with a good mystery. Find out what makes a mystery too good to put down. Share your clues and your own predictions with a small group. Read suspenseful, scary, or humorous parts of your book to friends. Plan or solve a class mystery.
PHYSICAL SCIENCE FOR CREDIT
6 WEEK COURSE--2 HOURS PER DAY
This is an introductory level survey class in which materials from many different branches of science are presented Particular emphasis is placed on chemistry, physics and earth sciences such as geology, astronomy, oceanography and meteorology. Successful completion of this course will provide ½ credit toward the science graduation requirement only for those students who have previously failed physical science. Contracts will be signed by parents and students detailing the attendance policy.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN 6 WEEKS WEST ELEMENTARY
This class is designed to provide
an enjoyable preschool experience, while incorporating various readiness skills
into the day’s activities. Art projects,
musical activities, movement exercises, and multi-sensory strategies will be
primary instructional techniques in the pre-academic lessons. An emphasis will be placed on phonemic
awareness activities because of the critical role phonemic awareness has in
developing good reading abilities. Another goal of this program is to promote
good socialization skills. $15 Fee includes

PUPPETS WITH PIZZAZZ

Learn why puppetry is one of the
oldest forms of entertainment for young and old. Let your imagination run
wild! This class is for boys and girls
who enjoy children’s storybook characters as they come to life through
puppetry. We will make puppets for the “3 Little Pigs,” and other children’s

Do you need help in reading? READ 180 is a comprehensive reading intervention system proven to meet the needs of struggling readers. 3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 4-8
This course is open to boys and
girls who are interested in learning how to sew. Basic sewing skills will be taught. The
student will learn how to take body measurements, select patterns and fabric,
and complete two garments to wear. Each
student will be required to provide his/her own basic sewing supplies, and
choice of fabric and thread. Patterns will be provided. $5.00

Prepare to step into the exciting world of nature with new, fun, hands-on activities, nature games and videos! Find out how much fun learning about nature can be. We will learn camping skills, camp cooking, and setting up tents. Experience nature first hand!
SOCCER

This is an introductory soccer class for boys and girls. We will put the skills we’ve practiced to use in playing the game of soccer. We also will reinforce sportsmanship, review the rules of soccer, and learn teamwork.
SPANISH K-2
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES K-2/3-5
This is an introduction to Hispanic culture and the Spanish language. Students will learn phrases and basic vocabulary in Spanish. Spanish culture projects and games will be learned.
SPEED AND STRENGTH

course is offered to boys. The first hour of this class will be designated to
stretching and a component of conditioning, agility, ply metrics, and/or speed
work. The second hour of each class
will be time in the weight room with supervised instruction. The routines/workouts can be designed to the
student’s specific goals. (i.e. circuit
training, power lifting, etc.)
SPEED AND STRENGTH FOR GIRLS 8-10 a.m. (Grades 10-11) 10a.m.-noon (Grades 7-9)

Use your creativity in designing
projects for all holiday seasons. You
will be using rubber stamps, markers, glitter pens, and other art supplies to
create cards, wrapping paper, and other seasonal projects. $5.00

3 WEEK
COURSE—GRADES 5-11
This class will involve the exciting activities of badminton, basketball, dodgeball, floor hockey, handball, speedball and ultimate Frisbee. The batting cages will also be open throughout this 6-week course as well. The weight room will not be available through this class. See Speed and Strength class for weight room times. Students may sign up for no more than 2 hours per session.
SUNSHINE SCIENCE
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES K-3
Study the world around you with friends! Explore the world of entomology—bugs! This is a popular course you won’t want to miss and is designed for the child who likes to ask why.
SWIMMING
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES K-11
All students will be tested and placed into groups for instruction according to their ability. Students who took Red Cross lessons within the past year may bring their current Red Cross card to the first class or their report card showing the level in which they should be enrolled. You may attend this class only one session.
TABLE TENNIS /
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 5–11
This class is open to boys and girls. Learn the fundamentals and rules of table tennis while sharpening your skills playing singles or doubles matches.
TEAM GAMES FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 5-11 .
This course will include traditional and non-traditional team games-- a new game everyday! Examples of games included in this course are softball, ultimate Frisbee, doctorball, basketball, monarchy, and pateka.
TENNIS I-ADVANCED
6 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 6, 7, 8, & 9 (8:00- 9:00) Mr. Rogers will determine placement. This course is for middle school and high school students who have had tennis lessons, but have not played on the tennis team. Students should be skilled enough to play matches. Skills will be taught and matches will be played.
TENNIS II-ADVANCED
This course is for advanced tennis players on the tennis team. This class will be on double play, techniques and strategies. Tournaments and challenges will be held periodically throughout the session. Emphasis will be on playing and competition.
TENNIS-ELEMENTARY Gr.1-3 Gr. 4-8
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 1-3 and 4-8
These tennis lessons, geared for
grade school students, will be held on the high school tennis courts. The major emphasis will be the basics plus
fun! Junior rackets will be furnished
and softer balls used to make learning much easier for the students.
THEATRE PRODUCTION
6 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 6-11
During this course students will mount a full-scale production of a play (possibly a musical). Students in the course will work on the on-stage and backstage elements in preparation for the show. Participation in this class includes evening performances at the culmination of summer school.
TRADITIONAL AMERICAN GAMES
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES K-3
Learn how to play traditional
games your parents and grandparents played before the invention of the computer
and PlayStation. We will learn about
parlor games like charades, checkers, and dominos, as well as outside
games. Different versions of hopscotch
brought from around the world to this country will be taught along with jacks
and marbles.
TREE HOUSE MYSTERY ADVENTURES
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 2-4
In this course, children will read and listen to stories about Jack and Annie. If your child loves a good mystery, this is the class for them. At the conclusion of this course, students will construct a mini tree house using various materials including popsicle sticks.

PER WEEK FOR 4 WEEKS starting June 22. For
students entering grades 5–12
In
voice lessons, students will learn techniques of proper singing and cover
different styles of vocal music. If the
student wishes to purchase a music book to keep, that will be arranged at the
first lesson. Space is limited to 35
students, on a first come, first served basis.
If you are registered for other summer school classes, you will receive your lesson by
coming out of class. All students will receive a post card with their lesson
time and day. Registration forms are available in all school offices.
VOLLEY FOR SUCCESS
6 WEEK COURSE / TUESDAY AND THURSDAY ONLY

3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 4 – 5
Volleyball I will teach the basic concepts of volleyball. We will work on passing, setting and serving. Competitive games will also be played.
VOLLEYBALL II — TRAINING FOR COMPETITIVE VOLLEYBALL
3 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 6 – 8
This course will let students who are interested in playing competitive volleyball work on skill and game development. Much of this course will be run like a practice, working on passing, setting, serving and attacking. There will also be time allowed for game play.

Searching for talented actors and actresses!! In this course students will explore the world of drama by performing skits and theatre games.
WRITERS’ WORKSHOP
6 WEEK COURSE--GRADES 11-12
This
course is offered for fulfillment of high school writing requirement. This course is designed for students who wish
to develop their abilities as a writer of both fiction and nonfiction. Students will spend time on scholarly
writing, such as papers and essays, creative writing, such as stories and
poetry, and other practical forms. The
course will include a variety of in-class writing activities and
assignments. The class is available for
1/2 credit to students who are credit deficient and to students who wish to
cover their writing requirement outside the traditional school year.
