MINUTES

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE

July 11, 2005

The Curriculum & Instruction Committee of the Board of Education of the School District of Jefferson met on Monday, July 11, 2005, in the High School Library.  Chairperson Whitmore called the meeting to order at 8:16 p.m. with Committee members Neils, Saelens, and Stoner present.

Approval of 6-6-05 Committee Minutes: Motion by Mrs. Neils, seconded by Mrs. Saelens to approve the minutes of the June 6, 2005 meeting as presented.  The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.

Curriculum

§         2006-07 High School Course Description Catalog:  Mr. Lovett, Jefferson High School principal was present to answer any curriculum-related questions committee members had relative to the proposed 2006-07 high school course catalog.  The proposed changes to the catalog were initially presented at the meeting of the Policy and Community Engagement Committee.  It was noted that some of the curricula contained in the catalog has not yet been approved by the Board. It was hoped that when the Board ultimately approves the catalog it would also be approving all of the enclosed curricula.  The second reading of the catalog will occur at the August committee meeting.

Staff Development

§         New Teacher Orientation Schedule:  Committee members reviewed the new teacher orientation schedule for 2005-06.  Following feedback from past new teachers, more individual time with the district technology staff has been incorporated into the schedule.

§         2005-06 Staff Development Plan: Committee members reviewed the 2005-06 staff development plan.  There is a change in the number of building versus district early release days.  There will now be three of each rather than four of one and two of the other.  The total remains the same.

Assessment

§         WKCE Data Discussion:   Director of Pupil Services Don Nolan and Director of Curriculum and Instruction Steve Landfried walked committee members through various WKCE data.

§         WRCT Data Embargoed until July 13:  Dr. Landfried reported that the Department of Public Instruction has embargoed release of Wisconsin Reading Comprehensive Test (WRCT) data until the following Wednesday.  Data, charts, and graphs similar to WKCE test information should be available on or shortly after July 13 for WRCT tests given in March 2005.  It will be discussed with the C&I Committee at its September meeting.

C&I Agenda Topic Suggestions: Each summer Committee members are encouraged to share suggestions for Committee agendas for the following school year. An item of interest was test analysis.

No August Meeting Reminder: Committee members were reminded that there will be no C&I Committee meeting on August 8.  The next scheduled committee meeting will be held on Monday, September 12.

A motion to adjourn was made by Mrs. Neils, seconded by Mrs. Saelens.  The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.
