MINUTES

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE

September 12, 2005

 

The Curriculum & Instruction Committee of the Board of Education of the School District of Jefferson met on Monday, September 12, 2005, in the High School Library.  Chairperson Whitmore called the meeting to order at 6:27 p.m. with Committee members Neils, Saelens, and alternate Schroeder present.  Mr. Stoner was absent.

 

Approval of 7-11-05 Committee Minutes: Motion by Mrs. Saelens, seconded Ms. Neils by to approve the minutes of the July 11, 2005 meeting as presented.  The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.

 

Curriculum

§         Interactive Mathematics Curriculum Syllabi—Grades 9-12:  Rough drafts of syllabi for Interactive Mathematics Program (IMP) courses for grades 9-12 were provided for committee review.  All other IMP courses will be phased in over the next four years. 

 

§         2006-07 High School Course Description Catalog—Second Reading: A motion to approve the 2006-2007 High School Course Description Catalog and forward for full Board approval was made by Mr. Schroeder, seconded by Mrs. Saelens.  The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.

 

Staff Development

§         K-5 "Growing with Math" Training:  Members of the K-5 Math team will be piloting the "Growing with Math" program during first semester.  A brief summary of staff development plans associated with the work were provided to the committee. 

 

§         Review of Staff Development Activities in Late August:  Brief comments about the success of staff development activities at the start of the new school year were shared with the Committee.

 

Instruction

§         Title 1 Plans for 2005-06:  New K-12 Reading Coordinator Dawn Antczak outlined Title 1 plans in the District for the 2005-06 school year.  She also described how she anticipates working with high school staff to improve things for struggling readers at JHS.  She briefly described her recent grant research project dealing with comprehension strategy on informational text at the fifth grade level. 

 

Assessment

§         2005 Wisconsin Reading Comprehension Test (WRCT) Results:  A variety of information comparing the performance of Jefferson's third graders with that of other districts was reviewed.   The WRCT will be replaced by a new test created for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction by CTB-McGraw-Hill. 

 

§         No Child Left Behind Testing Update:  The latest NCLB related news is that new tests—ACCESS for ELLs—will be administered earlier this school year than anticipated.  Information about the tests, test windows, and the multi-state assessment consortium was shared with the committee.

A motion to adjourn was made by Mrs. Saelens, seconded by Ms. Neils.  The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.
