MINUTES

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE

January 9, 2006

 

The Curriculum & Instruction Committee of the Board of Education of the School District of Jefferson met on Monday, January 9, 2006, in the High School Library.  Chairperson Whitmore called the meeting to order at 7:16 p.m. with Committee members Neils and Stoner and Alternate Schroeder present.  Mrs. Saelens was absent.

 

Approval of December 12, 2005 Committee Minutes: Motion by Mr. Stoner, seconded by Mr. Schroeder to approve the minutes of the 12/12/05 meeting as presented.  The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.

 

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

Freshmen Only First Day:  High school counselor Shannon Mooney and representatives of the Freshman Transition Steering Committee presented their proposal that freshmen only attend the first day of school for the 2006-07 school year.  Other school districts have successfully introduced similar initiatives. 

 

Committee questions on state minimums for the required number of hours/year, financing of this concept, and staff agreement were addressed. 

 

A motion to approve the Freshman Only on the First Day of School proposal as presented on a one-year trial basis and forward on to the full Board for approval was made by Mrs. Neils, seconded by Mr. Stoner.  The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.

 

ASSESSMENT

Reading and Title I Update:  Reading Coordinator Dawn Antczak updated the C&I Committee on reading assessment and Title I activities in the district.  Particular attention was given to the Scholastic Reading Inventories (SRI) being used in grades 3-12.

 

STAFF DEVELOPMENT

Second Semester Plans:  A summary of anticipated staff development and in-service activities for the second semester of 2005-06 was shared with the C&I Committee.

 

Discussion of Possible Topics for Future Meetings

A motion to adjourn was made by Mr. Stoner, seconded by Ms. Neils.  The motion carried 3-0.
