MINUTES

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE

May 9, 2011

The Curriculum and Instruction Committee of the Board of Education of the School District of Jefferson met on Monday, May 9, 2011, in the Jefferson High School Library.  Chairperson Dwyer called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. with Committee members Stoner and Volk present.

Approval of April 11, 2011 Committee Meeting Minutes:   A motion to approve the Curriculum & Instruction Committee meeting minutes from April 11, 2011 as presented was made Mr. Volk, seconded by Mr. Stoner.  The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.

ASSESSMENT TOPICS:

WKCE Data: Mr. Nolan led committee members in a discussion of the changes in proficiency levels in math and reading from 2009 WKCE testing to 2010 WKCE testing.  Comparative WKCE testing with other area districts and a building WKCE action plan was also provided for discussion.  Mr. Nolan explained that this data is used at the school level to create individual learning plans for students.

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION TOPIC(S):

Elementary Grade Configurations and/or Scheduling: Committee members briefly discussed the history of the elementary grade configurations in Jefferson.  When the district built the current middle school, options were researched and parents favored the ‘neighborhood school’ concept.

There was consensus that the current K-5 organizational pattern works, and there is no compelling reason to create a task force to look into this issue at this time.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT TOPIC:

Staff Evaluation Results from the April 13 Early Release Day: An evaluative summary of the activities carried out at the April 13 Early Release Day was reviewed.

Suggested Topics for Next Committee Meeting:

None

A motion to adjourn was made by Mr. Stoner, seconded by Mr. Volk. The motion passed on a voice vote.
